Cocoa Beach is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 14,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Intracoastal Waterway between Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Cocoa Beach has been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries and was first mentioned as "Cocheba" in 1542. The name "Coco" means "sweet drink." It became an incorporated city on December 12, 1894. In 1924 it merged with Dania Beach to form the current municipality of Cocoa Beach. The area now known as Cocoa Beach was once part of Indian Key west of Fort Myers. Spanish explorers discovered this region in 1665 when they sailed up the Everglades River to Biscayne Bay and charted it as Patok-n-ta-vee (present-day Miami). On October 2, 1763, Captain José de Escobar y Guerra landed on Patoka Peninsula after sailing downriver from Santa Rosa Key near Stocking Island; he named the area La Jolla de la Vega (the place of palm trees) because he found no tracks leading there from Punta Cana or Havana. In 1764 Cojoan Chief Juan Manuel Menéndez arrived at La Jolla from his expedition overland into present day Cuba and reported that he had found sugarcane growing near Islamorada Keys; this discovery led to Spain's claim to possession of all Florida east of Tampa Bay—an exclusive right which would be recognized only by Spain's King Charles III through a royal patent granted on July 26, 1795. In 1814 Governor Pedro Menéndez de Avilés authorized Major Antonio Vargas y Cepeda to purchase 3 square leagues (about ) of land within what is now Cocoa Beach County for $1 million dollars…. By 1800 most of what is today downtown Cocoa Beach had been developed along Causeway Drive where Marsh Road meets US 1…. By 1830 approximately one-third of all residences in central Cocoa were built… development accelerated following America's entry into World War I when many military personnel chose to move inland rather than return home during wartime shortages….. Between 1920 and 1930 more than 4500 homes were built in Downtown CocoBeach alone…….. Today Downtown CocoBeach still retains its original architecture including Art Deco public buildings such as City Hall…." At its founding date in 1894 CocoBeach had a population numbering just six hundred people……….As growth rapidly ensued CocoBeach quickly annexed adjacent Dania Beach making it one municipality with a population exceeding 10,000 citizens by 1925....On December 12th 1927 cocoaners voted overwhelmingly to annex Dania beach making their home inside the new municipal boundaries……….Today cocoaners make up almost 60% majority (>75%)of our municipal population…." In 1928 Snivelys Manufacturing Company began producing natural soda water called Fanta which became wildly popular throughout South Florida due largely to its marketing campaign led by local citrus grower Harry Snively who put billboards around town reading "Fanta Please! Coca Cola isn't good enough!" After years promoting Fanta through various media outlets Snively eventually stopped production due directly to health problems associated with drinking artificial sweeteners like saccharin…..After several lawsuits Swivels finally exited business operations selling assets back TO cocoaners who continue[ing]to produce Fanta products under different banners today."
