founded in 1885 by J.P. Morgan, Clermont was one of the first towns in Florida to be established as a citrusgrowing county. The early citrus industry in Clermont was based on growing oranges and grapefruit, but since these crops could not be grown near water, they were trucked in from southeast Texas and other parts of the country. By 1915, growth in the citrus industry had turned towards production of lemons and limes, which grew into a dominant crop in Clermont. Today, orange and grapefruit are still the main crops grown here, while lemons and limes are also major contributors to local commerce. In 1927, after years of negotiations between Citrus County officials and Orange County officials over boundary changes that would allow for more development within both counties, Clermont became an unincorporated town with its own government. This change allowed for increased commerical activity within the town limits without having to go through Citrus County or Orange County authorities; this made it easier for businesses to get tax breaks and improve their infrastructure. In 1955, when Citrus County merged with Duval County to form Jacksonville BeachCounty (later renamed Jacksonville), Clermont remained an unincorporated community until 1970 when it annexed into Jacksonville proper as part of that county's annexation program. Since 1970, much has changed about Clermont--including the increase in tourism that has helped drive economic growth during recent decades. However, because it remains an unincorporated community outside of Jacksonville Beach City Limits on Jaguars Bayou (or "The Lagoon"), there is still some level of autonomy granted to its residents over matters such as zoning regulations and fire codes
