The history of Bonita Springs goes back to 1868 when an American named Isaac Thomson purchased land on what is now Northwest Second Street in Bonita Springs Township. In 1906, he built the first hotel in Bonita Springs and named it The Isaac Thomson Hotel. His son-in-law, Waddell Hargrave, also founded The Gables Inn in 1911 which became one of the most popular restaurants in town until it closed its doors in 1984 due to lack of business opportunities. In 1935, developer Harry Schneider bought 2/3 of what would become North First Street from Thomson for $275,000 dollars and renamed it North Main Street after himself and his family members - Harry Schneider Sr., Harry Jr., Esther (nee Heller), Herman (Harry) Schneider III and Edith Ackerhaus - along with their spouses Alice Mueller (née Kapp). This gave rise to what is now called "The Square" downtown where many businesses were developed over time including: hospitals such as Veterans Affairs Medical Center & South Broward Hospital; department stores like Sears & Roebuck; theaters like United Artists Theatre; restaurants such as Pembroke's Place; golf courses including Miramar Country Club & Ocean Golf Course; colleges such as USF Central College & Stetson University; finally housing developments such as Regency Park Village which still stands today and Dilworth Downs which was demolished in 2006 but has been preserved by the City of Miami Beach Aviation Museum adjacent to IBC Airport. It wasn't until 1951 that a post office was established within walking distance of downtown by Jerald Toombs with mail served from both east side streets (Second Avenue northward) and west side streets off NW First Avenue southward (which included Northwest Third Street). Mail service resumed through USPS' predecessor Western Union Wire Company beginning on November 8th, 1951 under postal code 33609 with incorporation effective December 1st that year... . In 1961 when Interstate 95 bypassed central Broward County via Uptown Miami Boulevard this made downtown all that remained between Broward County proper westbound I-95 past CenturyLink Field northbound into Downtown Miami Beach while South Fourth Street continued becoming county road turning into arterial commerce street providing access northward only towards Sunrise Boulevard NE then onto Flagler Road continuing east towards Wynwood while Broadway became an expressway leading west out of town becoming state road US 90 following International Drive eventually entering Palm Beach County.. Many businesses were founded in Bonita Springs during this time including the First National Bank, American Legion Post #2, Kleenex Manufacturing Company, and Coca Cola Bottling Plant #1. The economy changed after World War II when many Americans returned home and started their own families. This change led to an increase in crime rates in Bonita Springs which made it difficult for business owners to keep their businesses open. In addition, Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of the homes in 1991 which caused many people to leave the community for fear of being displaced again. Since then,bonitaspringsfc has seen some growth with some new development such as Walmart Supercenter and Scottrade Center being built within walking distance of each other. Some original Residents have still remained such as Mayor Donny Youngblood who continues on as leader of town government today
