They founded the town of Bonita Springs as a summer trading post with Live Oak Road leading south to them and US 19 leading north to Gainesville. In 1840s there were no schools in this area so students had to attend school at Gainesville or St Augustine which was too far away for most people In 1850 when Fort Brooke was built nearby by Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest as part of his efforts to ensure that all black troops could not be used against Union forces during the American Civil War, white residents began moving out until only 6 or 7 families remained by 1870 when school began again One reason why there was no real growth until after World War II because much land had been given away to other towns/cities throughout Pasco County as part of agreements between local governments and developers There have been many changes over time including annexation by Hillsborough County in 1959; fire damage done to downtown Bonita Springs in 1996 which included setting off a destructive fire that destroyed almost all buildings except one family’s home; plans for large mixed-use development called “Lakeshore” being approved by city officials but never realized due MDA (Managing Development Authority) failure; rezoning fromresidential uses into commercial/industrial uses which has led to more businesses opening up within walking distance of where people live now . Between 1990 - 2000 – ground was broken on what would become known as Lakeshore Drive which ran along both US 1st AvenueSR & Gulf Boulevard just east of downtown center . That project did not go forward due lack of funding however future similar projects have seen some success such as Overpass Parkade mall which opened up next door last year Many new businesses have opened up since then such as Chick-fil-A restaurant located just off I-75 across from Interstate 75 exit 163 , Home Depot located just northwest Of IHOP on NW 2nd Street adjacent To Dollar General store ; Starbucks located just past Walmart across SR 165 from interstate 95 exit 167

Keyes who donated land for the city center and south side streets in 1912. The first post office opened in 1893 and was known as Garden City until 1907 when it changed its name to Bonita Springs after Mrs Keyes' daughter, Bonita (née Keys). In 1928 the Post Office moved from its original location on Muskegon Road to its current location at 201 E State Rd #104 within the present day boundaries of the city limits
