The Naval Sea Systems Command (Navy) has a rich history in Bartow, Florida. The city was founded on December 12, 1892 by Rear Admiral George H. Bartholomew, who named it for himself and his wife Charlotte. The first naval ship to be launched from the Bartow Navy Yard was USS Constitution on April 3, 1893. In 1907, the City of Bartow annexed the County of Polk and became its own municipality. On November 25, 1942, Naval Base Naples was established in Bartow and the U.S. Navy began using NAS Bar-TOW missiles from NAS Ocala as part of their air defense system. In 1967, NAS Joint Chiefs decision directed that all Naval Weapons Station(s) must become subordinate to Headquarters Amphibious Forces Pacific Fleet (HAFPWC). This change affected both NAS Jacksonville and NAS Miami Beach which were then under command of HQFPC until they were transferred to HAFPWC on October 1st 1971. Since then both have played an important role in providing military support for operations throughout Southeast Asia and worldwide including Operation Neptune’s Spear during the Vietnam War while also providing logistical support for Operation Desert Storm in 1991-1992; Operation Restore Hope following 9/11; operation Enduring Freedom following Hurricane Katrina; and joint exercises such as Rimancing exercise series with China every fall since 2007except for one due to budget restrictions caused by sequestration brought about by the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 aka "the sequester". On July 15th 2018 we celebrated our centenary with a parade down Main Street followed by a luncheon at Harbour View Restaurant located within walking distance from NAS Pier 13 where we had a display model replica Battleship Missouri built especially for our event outside

She was sunk on December 3, 1942 by American submarines in an action known as the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. The USS Bartow is one of only three submarines to be destroyed in combat by American submarines.
Bartow, Florida is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 10,405 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee metropolitan area. The racial makeup of Bartow was 97% White and 3% Black or African American. The town was founded in 1885 by John Fenton and named for General Joseph Easley Bartow who had been killed in an Indian attack near what is now Bartow during the Seminole Wars. When Joseph Easley's estate failed to pay taxes on its land in 1892, the village of Bartow sprang up around his plantation home which remains standing today as a house museum open to the public. The village quickly grew into a thriving community with schools, churches and businesses soon followed. In 1916, after experiencing heavy wartime bombings from World War I and II, the city government decided it would be more efficient to move all government offices from downtown Jacksonville to rural routes outside of town so that they were less likely to be hit by air attacks again. By 1948 it had grown so much that it elected its own mayor and first ever City Councilmember; however due to high population growth rates over time most of these distinction vanished when annexation by Kissimmee (in 1957) took place which destroyed many small villages/towns within Polk County resulting in an overall increase in population size without corresponding decrease in infrastructure or services available to residents. In 1976-1978 about 130 businesses closed their doors due to economic stagnation following four years of drought caused by severe hurricanes such as Hurricane Donna. However due to increased development throughout southeastern Polk County over the past few decades there has not been enough business closures or job loss associated with population growth alone – instead there has been significant investment including new housing developments and other professional services leading directly thereto – making Bartow one of fastest growing communities adjacent thereto within state boundaries today! Today’s Bartow is located along US 1 on State Road 810 just east of Interstate 441 (SR 810), minutes away from Walt Disney World Resort & Osceola Beach beaches & minutes away from Thomaston AFB - home base for both US Air Force B-52 bombers flying overhead during hurricane season & numerous other military installations including Naval Station Key West & Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton – as well as various medical centers including St Johns Healthcare System (a trauma center) In 1880 John Fenton established himself in what is now Barthow Village with some 60 acres purchased northeast of what is now Main Street across from his plantation home - this parcel became known as "Fenton's Plantation". He leased 45 acres northwest of his property from Benjamin Simms for $1 per year until he sold it back later that year for $5 per acre + interest payable annually until paid off - this parcel became known as "Fenton's Ranch" / "Fenton Place".
