Atlantic Beach is a small town in the Miami-Dade County, Florida area. The population was 14,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-The Keys metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2000 it had a gross income of $134 million and a median household income of $86,521. The town began as an agricultural community on the now historic Atlantic Boulevard between Indian Key Boulevard and Sunrise Highway. After Hurricanes Andrew and Irma destroyed much of the old housing stock in late October 2017, residents chose to rebuild their homes using local materials and labor instead of purchasing new construction equipment from outside suppliers or builder networks like Home Depot and Lowe's. In early 2018, plans were announced for a new shopping mall called "Atlantic Shoppes", which would include over 50 stores including Macy's, Sears, JCPenney, Eddie Bauer, Ann Taylor Loft and more than 20 restaurants including Capital Grains Market Grill & Bistro. On November 15th2018 Atlantic Shoppes opened its doors with over $100 million in retail investment from Live Nation/AIG; The Hard Rock Cafe; Wyndham Garden Resort & Convention Center; PNC Park -NASCAR Hall of Fame -and many others!

POPULAR, FAMOUS AND HERITAGE-WISE Atlantic Beach, Fla. is a serene and picturesque town located on the Gulf of Mexico about 25 miles south of Tampa. The town was founded in 1887 by J. P. Morgan and his partners as a small fishing village on the mainland shore of Biscayne Bay. Over time, the townsite grew to include land on both sides of Biscayne Bay and developed into one of Florida's most popular tourist destinations for retirees, visitors, athletes and others who appreciate its quiet sound, pristine beaches and well-preserved architecture dating back to the early 1800s. Atlantic Beach's rich history goes back centuries before that. The area that makes up today's Atlantic Beach was first inhabited by Native American tribes during the height of their cultures around 10,000 years ago. In 1795 Spanish explorers discovered what would become known as Biscayne Bay while exploring the Florida Peninsula for Spain illicitly looking for new markets for their natural resources such as sugar cane and tobacco. They named this region "Isla de Biscayne" after one of their shipswrecked off the coast in 1588 while sailing from Havana to see if they could find a route to India through Central America bypassing Cape Horn. The townspeople soon began trading with these new arrivals and built an early lighthouse in 1887 because they knew it would be necessary for safety when traveling nearland into what is now Polk County (now Hillsborough). In 1925, the Volstead Act made alcohol illegal in most U.S., so local businesses started selling wine instead which helped start Atlantic Beach's wine industry which still exists today making it one of Florida's oldest industries! The popularity of this activity led to several other businesses opening up such as caterers/diners/bars along with nightlife options like casinos which continue to thrive today! What sets Atlantic Beach apart from many other communities is its heritage-wise! Many buildings were erected during Prohibition which helps account for some unique features like prohibition license plates that can still be found on some older buildings! Additionally, much effort has been put into preserving old infrastructure including roads and bridges which have seen use throughout recent decades in commercial development projects such as Interstate 4 (the main highway running through town) or plans to rebuild parts of downtown whose destruction caused major traffic backups during Hurricane Irma! It’s no wonder that over $100 million has been invested in Atlantic Beach over the years – it’s definitely one place you won’t want To Go Home To!!!
In 1894, the first African American to live in Atlantic Beach was Dr. James Baldwin. He started a public health clinic and a daycare on the beach. In 1907, Atlantic Beach became part of St. Petersburg County and Baldwin's clinic became the only black-owned business in the county.
