Apopka, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,672 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford metropolitan area. The Apopka post office was established in 1892 and closed in 1979. The current post office, which opened on October 1, 1959, is located at 6500 E Apopka Boulevard. The town was named for John A. Post who came to the area in 1845 and built a cabin near present-day Apopka Beach. The first white person to live here was Captain David ap Peake who arrived with his family in 1849. In 1856 Indian Creek Road (present day US 98) were built through this section of Polk County by Capt Daniel Webster and others looking for a new route to trade with the Seminoles without being attacked by them on their own territory. When the road became effective an early settler named Wm Hays erected a log cabin on it about two miles east of what is now downtown Apopka about 1896 or 1897 when he sold land that includes modern day downtownApopka to Jno Fenton for $1,000 cash plus 5 bushels of potatoes per acre In 1907 Mr Fenton donated all that remains of his farmstead today's Fenton Park complex including 4 contributing buildings from original 360 acres which he acquired from Mrs Jane Mayo Barron along with 2400 sq ft lot where home park now stands Mrs Mayo Barron also donated 280 acres part of what still makes up downtownApopka today as well as 3 lots on either side of Main Street between State Road 192nd Avenue (now US 98) and University Avenue Today's Old Capitol building backs onto these lands today as does one wing of Mrs Mayo Barron's larger gift which included: A 3 story bank building with 180 feet frontage facing State Road 192nd Avenue (now US 98), 20 feet deep basement & 10 feet wide hinged roof & 2 stories high school addition now used as apartments across University Ave Also included were: A large garage/workshop/smithy shop on property opposite Bank Building; An old blacksmith shop & furnace behind Blacksmith Shop; A2 schools - One known only as "White School" - Race School within City limits; One school known only as " colored " - This school served all grades thru 8th grade until 1955 when it moved out into open fields adjacent to White School after some desegregation litigation led to its closure ; Approximate site size back then would be 2400 square feet
