It is with great sadness that we report the passing of one of Delaware's most loved marine gift history. Mrs. Anne Crouse passed away at the age of 89 after a long and successful career as a maritime historian and author. A former president of the Middletown Historical Society, Mrs. Crouse was an expert on early American maritime history and was instrumental in developing the city's claim to be home to America's first open-airmarine museum, The Maritime Museum of Delaware (MMD). Her love for her homeland's maritime heritage was evident in her many books and articles celebrating local coastal communities' maritime traditions and lore, including Middletown's own coverage in its History Book series issued annually since 1984. In addition to her work as a historian, Mrs. Crouse also wrote numerous children's books about sea life, featuring illustrations by noted illustrator James Thurber. Mrs. Crouse was preceded in death by her husband Bill Crouse Sr., mother Doris Kline Crouse, sister Elaine Welshell, brother Harry Welshell III and niece Kathy Welshell Scudder-Lambert.

Middletown is a town in Sussex County, Delaware, United States. The population was 1,582 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wilmington-New Castle metropolitan area. Middletown was founded in 1797 by John Dickinson and named for Middlebury College in Vermont. Middletown is located on Rte 542 south of Interstate 95 and about 16 miles west of Wilmington. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 931 people, 341 households, and 249 families residing in the town. The population density was 362.6 people per square mile (138.5/km²). There were 367 housing units at an average density of 158.8 per square mile (61/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White, 0% African American, 0% Native American, and 2% Asian; Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 1%. There were 341 households out of which 33% had children under the age OF 18 living with them, 57% were married couples living together, 11% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24% were non-families. 20%of all households were made up of individuals and 8% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. Middletown is a town in Delaware, United States. It was chartered on December 16, 1777 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and named after the home of his family, Middletown House. The first permanent settler in Middletown was Nicholas de Pont who arrived in 1778. The first school was built in 1806 and the first post office opened on October 25, 1807. The first doctor to be licensed to practice medicine in Delaware was Dr. George Foote who practiced at Middletown for over 20 years before moving to Lewes and later Dover. The population of Middletown increased rapidly from its initial hundred residents to more than 2,500 by 1830 when it became the most populous town in Delaware Territory. By 1850, the population had reached 10,000 and by 1870 it had grown to 15,000 people. In 1881, Middletown became part of the new state of Delaware and continued growing until it reached its present size of 25,000 people.
