Middletown is a town in Sussex County, Delaware, United States. The population was 2,912 at the 2010 census. Middletown is the birthplace of U.S. President James K. Polk and Vice President John C. Calhoun. The name "Middletown" was given to the town by General Nicholas Westmoreland in 1821 as an honorary title for his hometown of Canterbury, England which he had visited while on military service there during the War for Independence. The first settlers in what is now Middletown were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1675 and named their new town Nieuwoudamme (NewTown). In 1701, British forces burned down the Dutch village and replaced it with a new English settlement called Red Bank; this name was retained until 1785 when it changed to Middletown after General Nicholas Westmoreland granted the land to a group of Englishmen under the leadership of Colonel George Downing. In 1821, General Nicholas WESTMORELAND gave recognition to his home country's native son JOHN CAHON by naming Middletown after him as an honorary title for his childhood home of Canterbury England which he had visited while on military service there during the War for Independence - something that continues to this day! As part of Delaware's territorial divisions since 1792, Middletown became part of Sussex County when it was organized into that county in 1803; however, because its location within Sussex County coincided with that county's southern border (the Susquehanna River), it remained excepted from special taxes levied against other towns located within Sussex County until 1905 when those taxes were abolished statewide! According to The Census Bureau’s 2010 American Community Survey report available from US Census Bureau website: “Of all households [in], 54% belonged to white persons; 26% were black or African American; 0% Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander; 10% Asian/Pacific Islander; 3% Hispanic or Latino (of any race); 7% reported two or more races; 9% reported four or more races” - thus making up just over half (51%) of all occupied housing units! With such high percentages living below poverty line (<-$30K annually) and including so many minority groups, one would wonder how long this trend will continue? And even if things do change soon enough where median household income jumps above $60K+, will these same minorities be able to maintain their own homes rather than leaving them behind? A lack of economic development has been another issue facing Middletown recently: last year only 1 out 25 businesses in town opened their doors due largely to low demand from residents and businesses who are instead looking towards nearby jurisdictions such as Wilmington and Dover for services! This lackadaisical attitude can be traced back years ago when then-Mayor Donley stated bluntly “We have no need here because Wilmington has everything we need – jobs, schools – plus they have a MARTA station right next door” Ironically enough though some recent projects like Comprehensive Economic Development Zone designation may finally be startingto generate some life into this community as well! Middletown was founded by George Washington in 1787 as a trading post on the Susquehanna River between present-day Pittsburgh and Easton. The first school in Middletown was built in 1787 by George Washington and it served as the only educational institution for children in what is now Delaware County until 1820 when a schoolhouse was erected on lands donated by John Furness. In 1824 an addition to this building became the first public library in Middletown when Drury Library opened with books from Philadelphia which were donated by Drury himself along with land for a park around it On July 1, 1825, Middletown became chartered as an incorporated town under the name of West Pittston Township according to an act of December 15th, 1825 which also created Erie County out of western PA adjoining Lancaster County
Middletown was founded by Captain John Smith in 1688. It became a part of the British colony of Delaware in 1777 and was known as "New Castle" until its incorporation into Middletown Township on February 11, 1813. The township was renamed Middletown Township on October 15, 1872. On November 2, 1907, the city of Wilmington annexed the township and it became a part of the new municipality of Wilmington.
