In 1692, Milford became part of Hartford County. By 1700, the village had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1806, Connecticut's first railroad reached Milford. This resulted in an increase in traffic and business opportunities for the village. The town was incorporated in 1828 and by 1840 it had a population of around 2,500 people. However, by 1860, Milford’s economy had all but disappeared as a result of increased competition from other towns in the county. In 1865, while still living within Hartford County, Milford voted to become an independent town. It did so because it felt that it needed more autonomy than Hartford had given it. It continued to exist as an unincorporated community until afterHartford County merged with New York State in 1907.
