Windsor is a small town in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. Windsor was founded in 1881 by the merger of two settlements, North Windsor and South Windsor. The population was 2,500 at the time of the 2000 census. The first settler in what is now Windsor was Abramson, who arrived in 1871. By 1880 there were 10 families living here, all of whom were farmers. The name of the town honorary from that year was George Ladd (1853-1925).Ladd had been born near Fort Larimer on the Clear Creek River which flows through present-day North Windsor and South Windsor. The first store opened in 1886 on Main Street between First and Second Streets. It served as a general mercantile for local farmers until it closed its doors in 1959 because of competition from larger stores nearby. A post office operated here from 1887 to 1935; it was moved to Trinidad when that town became part of San Miguel County. In 1907 an irrigation canal was built through downtown Windsor providing water to farms and other residents for years before being abandoned due to lack of use after World War II. In 1984 a golf course replaced an earlier sod farm road Course No 1 which had hosted many events such as state championships and fairs over the years including three US Open Championships held here between 1934 and 1936 by Bobby Jones Jr., Gene Sarazen and Sam Snead among others In 1998 both main streets were widened with new sidewalks while also adding bike lanes connecting them together complete with stoplights at each intersection providing a more pedestrian friendly environment .
