On November 3rd he landed on Guadalcanal and immediately began fighting alongside his fellow Marines in what was known as Battle of The Inchon Peninsula until relieved by reinforcements on November 20th after suffering heavy losses including three killed and eleven wounded along with five Missing-In-Action (MIA). He returned to action on December 15th when Company F under Lieutenant Colonel Walter Widenkamp attacked two enemy positions near Kavieng airfield north-west of Rabaul without opposition but within minutes machine gun fire ripped through his company killing or wounding twenty four men; Sergeant John Crouch being one of those killed. On January 13th 1945 Private First Class Smith led Company G against Japanese positions at Mount Hagen east of Eboni airfield; during this engagement he sustained seventeen wounds including several that required hospitalization but ultimately managed to return to duty despite these injuries days later when Company G was ordered withdrawn from combat due to lack of food and water supplies; however only four members out of nineteen remained alive at finally concluding its mission seven weeks later having suffered over fifty casualties both dead and missing including Corporal Lenard Pfeffer (later Commandant USMC) who died suddenly while leading elements south towardsshore after rescuing downed troops during landing off Cape Gloucester; During these operations Private First Class Smith singlehandedly killed six Japanese soldiers using grenades from behind cover during handto-hand combat which has been mythologized ever since by American servicemen returning home write letters home bragging about it After World War II ended private first class Leroy A "Lenny" Smith served honorably with distinction through various units throughout Korea until discharged in 1951 having earned eight battle stars total
