Windsor was founded in 1876 by members of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. It became a municipality in 1907, and then a city in 1912. Windsor is the smallest city in Colorado and one of the oldest towns in the state. The population of Windsor was 9,898 at the 2010 census, making it the seventh-most populous city in Colorado. Windsor is located on U.S. Highway 50, about 25 miles east of Denver and 20 miles west of Fort Collins. The city is bordered by Thornton to the north, Golden to the east, Loveland to the south, and Pueblo to the west. The first white people to live in Windsor were Captain John Smith and his family in 1776. The area was part of the Mexican territory of Colorado when it was founded on July 14, 1847. In 1864, the United States acquired the remaining portion of Mexico and placed it within the new United States. The town began to grow rapidly as a result and by 1870, it had a population of 1,500. By 1907, Windsor had grown to 3,000 residents and its economy was based on agriculture and ranching. In 1916, an addition to the town called Commerce Park was built to accommodate growth within the community. This development led to increased traffic congestion on Main Street which caused problems for both businesses and residents. In 1922, a new school building was constructed in downtown Windsor which helped improve educational opportunities for local students. During World War II, Windsor played a significant role in the war effort as many homes were used as military barracks or stores.
