Wheat Ridge is a small town in southeastern Colorado, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. Wheat Ridge is part of the Fort Collins-GPB Micropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains and near Routt County, Nebraska. The first settlers in what would become Wheat Ridge were farmers who started out in 1876 on a farm west of present day Wheatridge. They name their farm "Wheat Ridge" because they saw an early wheat field that had been leveled by Indians to make way for a new hunting ground. The first post office was established in 1889, and the first store opened in 1902. In 1907, Wheat Ridge became part of Pikes Peak County when it was split off from Denver County. In 1924, Carbondale was founded as a coal mining town east of Wheat Ridge and soon after became one of the leading cities in central Colorado with its own Chamber of Commerce and public library system which still exists today (opened in 1925). Carbondale quickly became known as "the city on the hill" due to its prominence as an economic center for coal mining during this time period. In 1957, Wheat Ridge incorporated as a village under section 6-6-4 of the City Code which granted it special rights including zoning authority for education and fire protection purposes not enjoyed by other towns within city limits at that time. The village has since grown into one ofColorado's most vibrant communities offering an extensive range of services including arts & crafts stores, restaurants/cafes/bars/homeschools etc., retail therapy centers (including two JCPenney locations), professional sports teams (NFL Broncos stadium) and several high schools including Northwest High School which offers NCAA Division I athletics operations including men's basketball and women's soccer programs as well as girls' gymnastics program
