Thornton is located on the south bank of the Ouray River, about 12 miles (19 km) east of the city of Greeley. Thornton's ZIP code is 80534. The first settlers to Thornton were Tom and Sarah Goode in 1876. They brought with them cattle and horses and began farming land that now includes most of what is today Thornton. In 1881, A&P grocery store opened in town and it soon became a popular tourist spot for people visiting Greeley or nearby towns. In 1915, the US Congress passed an act authorizing the creation of a new county within Weld County, named after John Lubbock Thornton because he had been instrumental in helping to get it created. The new county was created on January 1, 1916 and included all present-day Weld County as well as parts of Iron County and Douglas County. The community's growth continued apace during World War II when many businesses came online including a munitions plant and post office which opened in 1942. After the war ended, some residents decided to stay put while others commute into Greeley for work or study; however, most residents returned home by 1960s due to dwindling resources statewide combined with advances in technology that made life easier for everyone else than it had been before).
