Superior, Colorado is a small town in the Clear Creek Valley of southern Colorado. The population was 2,332 at the 2010 census. It is located on State Highway 64 between Pueblo and Fort Collins. The townsite was first settled by people from eastern Colorado in 1846. The name "Superior" comes from Spanish "supermajor" meaning large or vast; this may be why it was chosen for the post office here. In 1865, Ulysses S. Grant visited Superior and recommended that the name be changed to "Fort Collins". In 1860, President James Buchanan had ordered General John J. Pershing to attack the Mexicans in New Mexico, and when Pershing arrived at Superior he found that it had been abandoned by its residents who were then setting off up hills for a new settlement called Victorville (later Victor). On July 1, 1861, Superior became part of Larimer County. They were led by James Wickersham, who had moved from Utah the previous year. He named his new settlement "Superior" after one of his brothers, who was also living in Douglas County. The site that became Superior was surveyed in 1886 and purchased by the Mormons for $1,000. It was here that they built their first store and began trading with the surrounding area. In 1916, the LDS Church active properties were consolidated into one place and renamed "Superior'." This gave rise to the name's current use; it refers to all ofDouglas County's Mormon settlements combined rather than just Superior." Today, there are over 100 different churches located throughout Superior including an LDS congregation which is second only to Salt Lake City among American congregations of this faith. Additionally, there are two baseball teams (the Wildcats and Indians) as well as a golf course (the Majestic). In addition to its many attractions, Superior offers a rich history which can be seen right here on its streets and buildings!
Superior, Colorado was founded in 1859 by wagoner John L. Hays and his wife Elizabeth. The first post office was established in Superior in 1861. The town name is derived from the Spanish word "superior" meaning "highest." In 1865, the United States Post Office moved to Superior from Trinidad, Colorado. In 1889, the towns of Trinidad and Arapahoe were merged into Superior. On December 12th, 1912, the name of Superior was changed to Northglenn with the intent of attracting more businesses to town. Northglenn has been called a "bedroom community" because it is only 15 minutes away from Denver's downtown area.
