Steamboat Springs is one of the oldest towns in Weld County and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years. It was first settled by fur traders in the late 18th century and became a mining town during the 19th century. In 1907, Steamboat Springs hosted its first United States National Championship Wrestling (NWA) event. The town also became home to America's Cup racing in 1911 and 1912. The area now known as Steamboat Springs was originally named North Park after General James Balfour who donated most of what is now north central Weld County to the town as part of his gift to Boulder City., The community began developing as a resort town around World War II when local manufacturers produced war materials such as aircraft engines and tanks at their factories in nearby Fort Collins and Loveland. After World War II ended, development continued with many high-end resorts being built until approximately 2000 when new developments replaced them including an indoor ski slope, multiple golf courses, luxury apartments, wineries and restaurants.
