In 1876, a group of Mormon settlers led by John D. Rockefeller established what would become Parker, Colorado. The town was named in honor of General James H. Parker who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became president of the United States. The townsites were founded on land that had been donated by General Parker’s brother-in-law, Brigham Young. The first post office was established in 1881 and was located at what is now called Main Street. In 1890, the original school building was replaced with a more modern structure which still serves as the town hall today. Parker experienced rapid growth after it became known as a stop on the railroad between Denver and Cheyenne. By 1907, there were over 100 businesses in the town and it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1912, Parker merged with Pueblo to form Pueblo-Denver City Council District No. 2 which lasted until 1975 when it was disbanded due to citywide consolidation efforts The industry that supported early Parkers included agriculture, mining, ranches and manufacturing goods such as saddles and harnesses for beef cattle. However, heavy industry only began to emerge during World War II when Parker became an important military base for the US Army Air Forces stationed in Fort Collins Today, parkers are home to some of Colorado’s most popular tourist attractions including Rocky Mountain National Park (home to many impressive mountain peaks), Canyonlands National Park (a stunning example of high desertscape) and Pike’s Peak National Monument (one of North America’s most popular ski resorts).
