Northglenn is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. Northglenn is part of the Denver–Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the home of Northglenn High School and Northglenn Community College. The first inhabitants of what is now Northglenn were Native Americans who hunted and gathered wild plants and animals that they brought back to their village for food. The area that includes today's town was named after Captain George A. Armstrong, commanding officer of the Seventh Regiment Colorado Volunteers during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). He had been sent from Fort Leavenworth to take command of a brigade composed mostly of American Indians led by General Santa Anna. When Captain Armstrong arrived in 1849 he found an empty lot on which he built his house and two other houses for his troops. The first store opened in 1852 and soon became a popular spot for goods sold by local farmers and ranchers as well as people from nearby towns who came to trade goods or visit Northglenn while on their way to or from Denver or Aurora. In 1857, when Weld County was established, Northglenn became its county seat. In 1865, Pueblo Agency Land Company organized land purchases in present day northcentral Weld County for settlers who would establish homesteads near Boulder Creek where Pueblo Agency Road crossed it on its way to Pueblo City (later called Aspen). When this area was surveyed by Jno Coots in 1870 it included most of today's east side of I-25 between Wadsworth Avenue and River Road; south side including all that now forms part of downtown Northglen; west side including much of today's edge along I-25B south of Wadsworth Avenue; parts also lying eastward within present day South Glendale Township; plus several square miles lying northwestward within present day Vernon Township northeast corner Vienna Circle.) Most pioneers located near water sources such as Boulder Creek or Rock Creek because those were considered more reliable resources than dry land for farming purposes at this time around in America. By 1880 some 400 homes had been erected with additional structures being erected over time such as schools, churches/synagogues (the first one being built in 1868), millsinery operations, stores etc., making up what we know today as "NorthGlen". Northglenn, Colorado is a small town located in Weld County, Colorado. The population was 1,539 at the 2010 census. Northglenn is home to the largest concentration of Native American people in the Western United States and also has a significant Hispanic population. The history of Northglenn dates back to 1876 when it was founded as an agricultural community by Cache and Nacogdoches Apache leaders Porcupine and White Cloud. In 1916, Northglenn became part of the newly created city of Greeley after Greeley's annexation by Denver. Today, Northglenn is a vibrant community with strong cultural ties to its Native American and Hispanic populations. The first Europeans to visit what is now Northglenn were Spanish explorers on their way from Santa Fe through Albuquerque to California in 1540. When they reached this area they found it uninhabited because there were no natural resources hereabouts. It wasn't until 1764 that French fur traders discovered this area while exploring for new routes eastward across country. A French post was established here in 1768 but it was destroyed by Indians soon afterward. In 1876, Cache and Nacogdoches Apache leaders Porcupine and White Cloud founded what would eventually become Northglenn as an agricultural community based on their grazing lands west of Fort Collins (now known as Colfax). Because there were no other homesteads available within a radius of twenty miles (30 km), porcupines set up shop on high hills near today's downtown core where they raised cattle, chickens, pigs, beeswax candles and other products for sale or use in their own homes or trading markets around the world. After years of hard work building some eighty adobe buildings which housed thirty-six families before World War I due to lack of funds (the costliest item then being horses), porcupines finally received land grant land east of Fort Collins along present day University Boulevard just south of Interstate 25/Ute Avenue on 4 March 1916 following enactment into law by Colorado Govt.: "An act approving appropriations for fiscal year 1916." Today's downtown core contains many reminders from Porcupine's time including his original house still standing – one can still walk inside its walls – as well as his storeroom where he stored goods during those early days when outside transportation was not possible or expensive enough for him to send his goods all the way downrange via wagon! His Trading Post: This three story wood frame structure served as both business office and living quarters forporupines who lived cheek by jowl with their livestock throughout much of northwestern Ute County during those early years; most residents commuted either directly downriver or overland using buffalo robes brought down from central Colorado into our region daily! The Trading Post sat atop a large rock at corner Third Street & Main Avenue NW until about 1951 when vandalism left it severely damaged; currently only portions remaining visible are front steps leading up these two granite stairs behind which you'll find an impressive iron railing surrounding approximately 20 feet (6m) wide open space containing circa 30 bricks encased in heavy glasses displaying intricate carvings…..A view out windows onto 3rd Street & Main Avenue NW suggests that sometime between 1951-1965 someone tried unsuccessfully - unsuccessfully I might add - to restore this property back into operation as a viable tourist attraction…." In 1916, Greeley annexed northcentral Weld County making Northglenn part of the new city government which had grown rapidly thanks largely to munificent donations from businessmen John Daley Sr., John Daley Jr., Charles Evans Hughes II and others associated with Greeley’s burgeoning steel industry boomtown renaissance period just prior thereto! In 1951 however due to budgetary constraints within city limits Greeley decided against restoring The Trading Post property back into operation but instead placed it under protection under state statute number 6-2-527 authorities must protect any “historic landmarks” erected before 1886 regardless whether they remain extant…Today Many years later another attempt has been made(?) w/state permission once again Restoring One Of Our LocalHistoric Landmarks Back Into Operation……….Although Meant For Educational Purposes Only Today’s economy vitality has spawned several businesses adjacent To Downtown Core such As A Restaurant Which Opens Up Close Next door To An Auto Parts Store And A Massage Place That Uses Much Of What Was formerly hauled Downriver From central Colorado into our Region daily!!!
