During World War II many local farmers joined the army and went off to fight overseas as part of Operation Overlord; many residents also left for military service including prominent lovelorn couple Betty Furness and Dick Raymond who later founded Hi-Dea Foods company in Aurora while they were away. Many locals stayed behind to help run their farms during peacetime although it was difficult since so few people knew how to farm during wartime times without using machines that would have caused danger to civilians or enemy troops supplies passing through their areas without being detected or bombed/destroyed!
