Longmont is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boulder–Aurora–Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Longmont were the Arapaho and Cheyenne (NamUs #64692) who founded a village on the east side of Clear Creek in 1868. The Arapaho left after a Apache Chief named John Coltrane abducted their leader, his wife, and six children in 1868. In 1870, George Earle constructed the first store in what is now Longmont. In 1880, he built the first school. In 1893, he built the first Masonic Lodge in Longmont. In 1902, Denver Gold Mines opened up nearby La Plata Canyon with some of Colorado's most Famous Gold Rush minerals including quartz and gold sulfide ore that led to what is now known as "the Golden Age of Mining". This period also saw significant growth for businesses such as banks and hotels along Capitol Hill which are still standing today despite being destroyed by fire in 1957

Longmont is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now Longmont was first settled by Europeans in the early 1800s as part of what became Larimer County. A post office was established at Longmont on December 8, 1876, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on November 15, 1907. The first settler to come to what is now Longmont was George Hargrave from Vermont. He homesteaded land near present day Lamar Boulevard and Broadway in 1879. In 1881 Hargrave and his family were joined by John Bowers from Missouri who purchased 4 acres (1 km²). By 1886 there were 10 settlers living at Lamar Boulevard and Broadway with a total of 24 acres (9 ha). In the early 1900s many new towns began to be founded all over Weld County as a result of the opening of the Ute Pass Railroad which connected Denver with Leadville via Longmont and Broomfield. Many people left Boulder for these new towns because of the lure of jobs in mining or engineering opportunities. However, when World War I started young men returned to Boulder to help build up our military infrastructure; this didn’t last long as war production shifted towards munitions instead. In 1921 two local businessmen David Ladd and Harry Chandler decided to open an ice cream parlor called Dairy Queen next door to their grocery store on Second Street in downtown Longmont – soon followed by several other stores which fed into it until it became one huge chain! The popularity of Dairy Queen led to another business venture for both men: they built a water line fromaha Spring directly into town so that people could buy milk directly from locals without going out into mile after mile of woods! This enterprise proved very successful but unfortunately also caused some environmental damage as runoff went back intothe spring through manmade channels
In 1871, a group of men led by John Atchison bought the rights to build a railroad in what is now Longmont. The first train arrived in Longmont on October 1, 1871. The town was founded on the site of an old Native American encampment and named after George Long Mounted Rifleman, who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1898, when Colorado became a state,Longmont became its capital. The city's population peaked at 100,000 in 1920 and declined to 50,000 by 1950. However, during the 1990s and 2000s growth rates resumed as the city introduced new shopping districts and attractions such as libraries and art galleries. As of 2019, Longmont has a population of over 160,000 people
