The area that now makes up Littleton was first settled by Europeans in 1849 when gold was discovered near present-day Denver. A post office called Littleton was established in 1853, and a school district was formed in1855. By 1860, little remained of what would become Littleton except for some earthworks and a few homes around First Street corner east and west on University Avenue. In 1865, John Jardine founded the Central Western Railroad which connected Denver with Canon City and Pueblo via El Paso County. This railroad allowed for more farming activity near Canon City which led to new town growth around it including what are today Littleton, Highlands Ranch, Arvada and Aurora Heights neighborhoods.. In 1870s another round of white settlement began with soldiers returning from World War I finding land available north of Golden but too watered or too cold for their liking so they bought it from the Native American occupants In 1886 Major General James H Mifflin decided to establish Fort Lyon northwest of modern day Littleton after hearing about Indian removals from Colfax County (now Wheat Ridge). It took until 1893 before construction started on fortification walls that remain today as part of Littlenton's downtown area When Colorado became an independent state on November 4th 1861 due to disagreements over slavery within Kansas there were also political subdivisions created including Auraria Township (later Great Plains), Greenwood Village (later East Aurora) on the eastern edge ofLittleton proper; Algona (later Northglen) northeast corner stretching into Jefferson County; Centennial Park lying between these two townships; present-day Longmont lies just southwest along Interstate 25 between Larimer County and Adams County ; Durango lay east across State Highway 26 between Longmont and Cherry Creek communities During this time much development occurred outside town limits such as Canby Mills located east off US 6 just southwesterly from Centennial Park during this time period also . This led to growth in social services, schools, and infrastructure. By 1983, Littleton had an estimated population of over 300 people.
