In 1861, Lafayette residents voted to become a town. The vote followed the same rules that towns in Colorado had been using since 1876: A majority of residents had to approve the merger. The first military deployment in Lafayette was in 1862 when the Confederate army invaded Colorado. Before long, Lafayette residents were helping to arm and support the Confederate army. In 1865, Lafayette citizens helped lead a successful siege of Fort Lyon by 2,000 volunteers from nearby Greeley. In 1870, another successful siege ensued at Fort Lyon led by local militia members and citizens from Lafayette wedge between pro-slavery forces and abolitionist forces.

Lafayette is a town in Limestone County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins-Aurora, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to live in Lafayette was John Wesley Powell in 1907. He and his wife founded the Faith Missionary Baptist Church in Lafayette on what is now US 83 Business Loop. In 1915, Lafayette became the first incorporated municipality in Limestone County when it merged with neighbouring towns of Belle Fourche and Morrison. In 1925, Lafayette metamorphosed into a successful agricultural community when it developed its own irrigation canals which led to increased crop production and more than doubling its population by 1930. From 1933 to 1945, Lafayette experienced dramatic growth as World War II turned against Germany and many farmers here chose not to fight because of high prices for munitions that had come from abroad.During this time period there were also numerous new businesses formed including a hospital (1948), grocery store (1949), post office (1957), motel (1958), primary school (1963) and two churches (1965). In recent years agricultural production has been declining while new development has grown around retail services, arts and culture, as well as potable water supplies for existing residents as wells as for growing numbers of visitors who visit during summer months for hiking or picnicking at nearby lakes or reservoirs. Lafayette is located about 8 miles east-southeast of Fort Collins on U S 83 Business Loop According to the 2000 census,[1] there were 1,691 people residing in Lafaurie Village & 2 hamlets: Horseshoe Bend & Park Rapids Corner; total population 2272 ± 97% White except 3% Native American; other races are 1%.[2][3] As of 2010[4], according to the latest available figures from the Colorado Department of Transportation's Highways Division,[5] Lafaurie Village & Park Rapids Corner have combined populations of 698 residents (−9%), making them both functionally abandoned villages without any public transportation options or access to basic needs such as health care or education
