Greenwood is a town in Rocky Mountain County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Greenwood was founded in 1872 by Mormons as a farmstead on the edge of what is now Aspen. In 1875, the Mormon pioneers who founded Greenwood decided to move their settlement further north and name it after John Greenwood, an early settler of that area. The post office was established in 1876 and mail service began in 1880. The first school in Greenwood opened in 1870 and was operated by private individuals until 1886 when a public school became operational under the direction of the Denver-Aurora School District. In 1903, Greenwood voters approved an ordinance authorizing annexation by Aurora which happened on December 6th of that year. However, due to political wrangling within Aurora over control of city services and taxes, annexation did not take place until 1912 when it finally occurred following a vote by the city council over objections from residents. During World War II (1939-1945), Greenwood served as both an airfield and military hospital for soldiers stationed in nearby Aspen and Centennial counties. A postwar boom enabled growth for local businesses culminating with incorporation as a municipality on January 1st, 1949; however growth slowed during the late 1950s as new suburban developments were built around town centre while job opportunities declined across all industries%. In recent years there has been increasing development back into downtown Greenwood with plans for mixed use housing projects near Interstate 25/Ute Street crossings while efforts are being made to revitalize older parts of town center including Carpenter's Alley between Cherry Creek Boulevard and I-25/Ute Street
