Greenwood, Colorado is a town in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2000 census. Greenwood has an estimated elevation of 4,399 feet (1,553 m). It is part of the Denver–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. Greenwood was founded by Mormons in 1879 because they were struggling to find a place to live after losing their lands in Utah. The Mormon settlers named it "Mormon Ridge" and built their first home there in 1881. The town name was changed to Greenwood in 1893 after a vote to change the town's name to honor Horace Greeley, one of America's most famous political leaders and abolitionists. The first post office opened on November 1, 1881. Greenwood had two stores and five residents when it did so. By 1900, the population had grown to 13 people and three stores when it incorporated as a village. A school began operation in 1903 and continued until 1951; the current high school building was completed in 1915. In 1911, Greenwood became one of six townships within San Miguel County; annexation followed two years later. In 1932, Greenwood erected its own water supply system with private donations from citizens and businessmen including Jerald Miller and Milton Hinton Sr.. That same year saw the opening of what is now known as the "Greeley Square", which served as the community's main square until 1977 when it was replaced by Memorial Park Boulevard; also that year saw construction begin on what would become known as "The Grove", which served as both the town hall and library until 2003 when those functions were split between second floor municipal offices across First Avenue South/Upper Main Street while also hosting retail operations on Second Avenue South/Lower Main Street for over 50 years before being moved indoors into new facility through renovation beginning in early 2017 An addition to this complex includes a gymnasium that opened its doors on September 6th 2018

Greenwood is a town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. Greenwood was founded in 1876 by John Greenwood and his wife Anna. It has been the seat of Douglas County since 1899. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. The town was named after Greenwood Forest, Arkansas. In 1865, Brigham Young's wagon train stopped in that area and he ordered the immediate erection of a trading post to promote trade with other nearby settlements. American Fur Company trader George Armstrong Custer also stopped here while on his way to Fort Laramie in 1863-64. The first post office opened in 1867, and the first settler was Isaac Briggs from Illinois. In 1870s an event occurred which helped make Greenwood a thriving community: A lorryload of gold ore from out of state crashed into the woods near the town site and spilled its load onto the ground creating an artificial gold mine which soon became known as "The Golden Lorry". This stimulated interest among settlers in this undeveloped area and so growth continued unabated until 1893 when coal started becoming available for use power plants and smelting mills; this led to reduced demand for goods exported through townspeople' stores and businesses dried up or closed altogether. John Greenwold arrived here in 1876 during Gold Rush days seeking new land to prospect for resources following his father’s death just two years earlier while mining claims near Arvada Springs, Colorado Territory (now Denver). He purchased 640 acres east of present day Greenwood from Simon Gossett who had lost it during a cattle drive five years earlier across some hills northeast of present day Greenwood on what is now eastern side Of Interstate 25 south of Aspen Park Road east of Uinta Pass Road
