Greeley is a city in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. Greeley is the capital of Weld County and home to both the Colorado State Capitol and the Greeley Municipal Airport. The name "Greeley" is derived from the Wichita term იროდე, meaning "place where buffalo grazed." The first Europeans to visit what is now Greeley were French traders in 1760–1763, though they did not come on any trading trips that are known today. In 1801, Fort Larimer was built on land owned by Isaac Asahel Greene; it served as a military post until 1814 when it was abandoned because of its difficult location near two major rivers. A year later, John Evans founded another military post at Battlefield for his cattle drive into central Denver Territory. Evans called his new town Fort Preble because he had appropriated land for an army camp there before Congress made land available for civilian settlement under the Adams-Onis Treaty of 1802. In 1809, George forfeit grazing rights on Buffalo Mountain so settlers could build up key transportation links between Cache Valley and Aurora without fear of being hunted down by those animals. The first store opened in what is now North Park in 1810 when Wm Higginson donated goods from his store at Canon City (now Telluride). On February 14, 1830 commissioners appointed by Governor John Roche visited Greeley with proposals to create a county seat for Weld County but no action was taken until November 24th when pamphlets about Weld Counties proposed towns in Northern Colorado started circulating around Greeleyans; these proposals advocated moving the county seat eastward from original Fort Lyon (later North Park) to become Cheyenne or Wind River Junction due to growing wheat production northwest of Denver during this time frame A group led by Drs James Weller and David Starr Jordan purchased 640 acres south of present day Centennial Boulevard for $4 per acre in April 1834; their goal was to establish a center for education and trade within Weld County while also creating employment opportunities for farmers west ofDenver using whatever methods possible including irrigation systems and canals which would eventually be developed into Interstate 25! This effort failed as well due primarily to lack of interest throughout most of Phoenician Territory despite offers totaling $100,000 plus inducements like tax breaks worth several hundred thousand dollars being offered! Withdrawing all but five acres back onto their purchase site—the final parcel still stands today next to I-25—the Wellers & Jordan’s became one of only two private citizens ever awarded statehood within Colorado Springs!!!! It should be noted that this issue never went away simply because they didn’t have enough money or support from government officials!!! Today we enjoy some wonderful views from our property including Keystone Reservoir just southwest across Centennial Blvd., HWY 70 just northwest past us on US Highway 26 about 8 miles northeast of downtown Greeley proper as well as beautiful rolling hills extending eastward out beyond I-25 ball park favorably located adjacent providing excellent wildlife viewing potential!!! It should also be noted that after achieving statehood our family commemorated this event each year with dinner theater productions featuring classic western plays set inside our lovely home overlooking Keystone Reservoir during July/August each year prior artwork carefully chosen ensuring historical accuracy
