The Marine Corps arrived in Federal Heights, Colorado in 1924. The community was founded as a military post and the Marines were the first to arrive. During this time period there was talk about reactivating Marine detachments stationed at Ft Carson or Cherry Creek Arsenal but no action was ever taken until 1992 when then-Congressman Tom Tancredo announced plans for reactivating Marines stationed at Ft Carson based on recommendations from retired Commandant General James Mattis who served during Operation Desert Storm%. Federal Heights is a census-designated place (CDP) in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 4,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Junction–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. Federal Heights is located on U.S. Highway 70 east of Grand Junction and northwest of Fort Collins. The community was named for General George A. Washington and his forces who fought in the Mexican–American War at San José de la Frontera in 1846, as well as for related land grants given to American soldiers during that conflict. The first post office was established in 1865; it closed in 1893 due to lack of mail service from Fort Collins or Greeley City. In 1907, the town formed a school board with sixteen members and began building its own schools; four were built within one decade. In 1916, Federal Heights became a city after being approved by referendum under an act passed by Congress following World War I which shifted most U.S.–Mexico border towns eastward into newly created Weld County because of increasing agricultural production in that area around Denver and Aurora Counties west of the Arkansas River. By 1916, the population had reached 10,000 people. During World War I, Federal Heights played a significant role in supporting military efforts in Central Europe. The town hosted large numbers of soldiers who were deployed to fight in various theaters of war. In 1918, local citizens also volunteered to help support American troops stationed abroad during World War II. After the war ended, Federal Heights experienced rapid growth again due to new development along Interstate 25 and other highways that crossed through the town center. Today, Federal Heights is one of Aurora's most vibrant communities with a strong emphasis on community service and economic development. In 1892, the U.S. government leased 1,500 acres of Federal Heights land for a new military reservation. The area was named for President George Washington and Vice President Richard Nixon. The reservation was used as an artillery range until 1898 when it became a stopping point for wagon trains traveling to the goldfields in Colorado. In 1912, the reservations were transferred from the United States Army to the Bureau of Indian Affairs. In 1922, the Department of Interior renamed Federal Heights Indian Reservation after Major General John A. Logan who had purchased it from the Chiricahua Apache people in 1912. In 1934, all remaining Apache people were removed from Federal Heights and replaced by Navajo Americans and some white settlers who called themselves "Trucks." Federal Heights is now part of Westminster City limits which includes most of Colorado's history between Denver and Boulder metro areas
