From its inception as the United States Coast Guard in 1917, the Coast Guard has been an essential part of America’s maritime security and public safety. Today, the Coast Guard operates more than 12,000 miles of coastline and more than 2,000 landing sites worldwide. The Coast Guard is a force that responds to emergencies and provides safe access to transportation routes for shipping and othercritical infrastructure. The history of gift giving to the Coast Guard begins with the first Federal Hill Post Office in Colorado Springs in 1917. At this post office, mail was delivered by sea from England via Bristol Channel. As ocean travel became less common and airmail became more prevalent, customs officers began receiving gift packages from visiting sailors on their return voyage. In 1924, Congress passed an act authorizing the creation of a coast guard service within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This gave rise to two important aspects of Coast Guard gift history: First, DHS responsibility for providing overall financial support for coast guard operations; second, the appointment of a Regional Commander who would coordinate gifts between various CBG regions. The first recipient of this important honor was Rear Admiral John J. McCloy Jr., who served from 1988-1992. In recognition of his many contributions to DHS during his time as Regional Commander – most notably chairing the National Defense Authorization Act Committee – he was awarded a Presidential Medal Of Freedom in 1992. Today’s coast guard service is one rich with tradition and memory; it owes much to those who have come before us including Rear Admiral McCloy Jr., President George H W Bush (receiving medals for his work as Regional Commander), Admiral James E Stavridis (Chief Operating Officer), Harry S Truman (Presidential Medal Of Freedom), Adm David Ziegler (Director General) and Chairman Sandy Berger (Chairman Emeritus).
