When Evans residents Al and Karen took their first steps on the family farm in 1958, they found a handgun lying abandoned in the barn. The couple quickly became Gun Lovers, and soon had two pistols - one for each member of the family. In 1864, John Evans founded the town of Evans in Glenwood County, Colorado. The town was named for John Evans, who had donated land to the new community. The first settler in Evans was James A. Hutton, who built a cabin in 1865. By 1870, the population of Evans had grown to over fifty people and the town became a stagecoach stop on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1875, Evan's first post office was opened and by 1880, there were also several businesses in Evans. In 1886, Evan's first school was built and by 1890, it had become an all-girls' high school. In 1916, Evans became a city and today it has a population of over twenty thousand people. John Evans is considered one of America's earliest settlers and he played an important role in helping found Evans as well as many other towns throughout Colorado during its early years. John Ahern (1868-1946), Johns son and successor at farming operations withinEVans community later called "The Father ofEvans", started farming operations here after leaving college with a degree in engineering from Stanford University where he met John Ahern while attending law school there; they traveled together to look for land opportunities in northern Colorado before eventually settling here permanently around 1915 when AVern formed what would become Colorado Fuel & Iron Company which still exists today as Anadarko Petroleum Corporation with headquarters located just east of downtown Denver!
