The town became a post office in 1886 and a railroad junction in 1907. In 1937, Evans was named for General George Evans of the Union Army who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first settler in Evans was James McFarlane, who arrived with his family on November 29, 1876. They were the only family to live in what is now Evans until 1904 when pioneer John Ferguson moved into the area and established himself as a farmer and ranchman. In 1908, Congressman Alfred Prentice introduced legislation to rename the community after General George A. Evans of the Union Army during the American Civil War who had died some years earlier while fighting for Mexico City against Confederate forces under General Santa Anna In 1938, when US Route 66 passed through nearby Greeley it was decided that Evans would be its new name because it had been so influenced by that route both historically and geographically. The original street names were changed along with most of Weld County on May 25th of that year when US Routes 6 & 8 were also renumbered due to construction projects across America at that time.
