Coffee first originated in the Andes in South America. The coffee beans were roasted and ground using a lot of rocks, which gave it its unique flavor. Coffee was carried back to Durango, Colorado during the gold rush because people needed aenosids, or caffeine-containing plants, for their morning coffee. In 1892, Durango had its first Starbucks location and quickly became known as the birthplace of espresso. In 2007, Starbucks announced they would close all their stores in the United States by May 1st, 2008. However, they reopened some locations on October 7th, 2008 with new cafes inside and outside of shopping malls across the country. Since Starbucks closed their stores in America, many other cafes have cropped up around the country serving different types of coffee and pastries. The history of Durango can be traced back to 1868 when prospectors found coal near present day Durango. Coal mining began in earnest around 1880 and by 1912, there were over 20 mines operating in what is nowDurango. From this early days until today, Durango has been an important economic center for northwestern Colorado. In recent years, however, there has been a corresponding increase in drug trafficking and crime which has taken their toll on the community. With this reality in mind, Mayor John Crowley announced his intention to pursue annexation byDenver so that Durango could benefit from city services without having to sacrifice its economic stability or quality of life
Tactical coffee has a long and varied history, dating back to at least the 1700s. In many cases, coffee was used as a military tool in times of conflict. While it is not always clear how or when tea became associated with coffee, the two beverages have been intertwined for centuries. The first recorded mention of coffee being brewed as a beverage comes from Ibn Khaldun in his Muqaddimah (1355 C.E.). He noted that Arabs would drink black beans mixed with water and then suck on theResultant drink to remove impurities. Coffee was also mentioned by Leonardo da Vinci in his Codex Medicus (1495-1519 C.E.) where he mentions drinking two cups of Arabica beans after meals to increase energy and digestion. In 1297 A.D., while fighting against the Mongols near Baghdad, Genghis Khan drank three cups of café maduro before battle in order to improve his strength and endurance. The European conquerors who invaded Asia soon began consuming coffee as their primary source of caffeine, replacing horseback riding with cars and trains as transportation methods during this time period (Lloyd). However, despite its widespread consumption throughout Asia, no written document exists documenting espresso being created until 1602 C.E., when Giancarlo Lazzaro produced an Italian blend named Coffeccio Nero which became popular among contadini regions in Italy (Frazer). Coffee production increased significantly following this discovery with multiple small farms producing high quality beans for export; however its popularity died out until about 1825 A.D.(Lloyd). This decline can be attributed to several factors such as difficult shipping conditions due to weather conditions around the world at that time, competition from other drinks such as whiskey and gin, and marketing efforts by brewers looking for new markets (Watson). Additionally German brewers began exports between 1830-1840 A D., which caused some local coffeeshops to close(Brewer). Consequently coffee production slowly resumed throughout most of Europe beginning in 1840 A D.(Brewer). By 1850 A D., espresso had become firmly established within Italian society(Brewer) thanks largely to Giovanni Boccanegra who developed a machine called La Volta that allowed for faster brewing than traditional roasting techniques(Brewer) . However it took another fifty years until commercially available machines made espresso widely available throughout the world(O’Neill et al.). Throughout its history tactical coffee has been used both offensively and defensively; often employed during wartime as a source of energy or sustenance while under enemy fire or taken up into battle on battlefields where there is no other caffeinated beverage available nearby(Frazer). Today tactical coffee remains an important part of many cultures across the globe including those living under war-torn environments or those who need an energizing drink during long deployments(Watson).

Durango, Colorado is a small town located in the San Miguel County seat of Socorro. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. It has an estimated population of 2,451 as of 2019. The name "Durango" is derived from the Spanish word "Durango", meaning "hollow." The first settlement in what is now Durango County was made by Mormons on July 26, 1847. They named their new community after José Gabriel Durango who had died six days earlier while hunting in nearby La Paz County. In 1872, Durango became part of the United States and it soon became known for its silvermining operations. In 1903, the discovery of gold led to a boom in mining activity and Durango quickly became one of America's most important Gold Rush towns.
