The National Guard in Durango, Colorado was a part of the United States Armed Forces from its inception on March 14, 1861. The first national guard unit was organized in Durango under the command of Colonel John C. Fremont. The original national guard unit in Durango consisted of only men and there were no weapons or equipment available to them. This lack of armament and equipment did not stop theDurango Guards from quickly gaining notoriety for their bravery and heroism during the American Civil War. In 1867, Congress passed an act which authorized the organization of a battalion regiment of infantry called the "Colorado Volunteers". The 1st Battalion Colorado Volunteers was activated on November 4, 1867 at Fort Evans with Headquarters at Coal Mines Street and Main Street in downtown Durango. At this time, nothing that would later be known as national guard units operated out of Fort Evans other than men serving out their Deployment Certificates until 1903 when a permanent military installation was established at Camp Verde which served as both headquarters for both state militias and the National Guard until it closed in 1959. When camp Verde closed down, all National Guard Troops stationed therein were mustered out between November 1959-March 1960 inclusive but many items such as rifles, ammunition magazines, tents etc., remained behind until 1993 when they were donated to two local organizations who have continue to operate them today - The El Paso County Historical Society (EPHS) and The Rocky Mountain Museum & Library (RMML).
