Durango is a town in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,849 at the 2010 census. Durango is the second-largest municipality in San Miguel County after Pueblo and it is also one of the most populous municipalities in Colorado. It lies on the Animas River and its name comes from Spanish meaning "old fort." The first Europeans to visit what is now Durango were Franciscan friars who founded a mission there in 1776. The mission was abandoned in 1847 and then destroyed by Indians during the Mexican War. A portion of it still stands today as Mission Santa Fe de la Plata In 1868, Durango was incorporated as a village when many farms were combined into one entity for tax reasons. In 1916, Durango became an unincorporated county seat when San Miguel County was created from part of Weld County. The post office moved to Trinidad in 1924 and remains there today. The oil industry began to take hold in Durango circa 1901 with several men organizing themselves into companies that drilled wells deep under the earth near where present day Interstate 25 meets the Animas River. These early pioneers had no idea that they would live through some of history's worst Earthquakes which struck just 10 years later followed by another devastating flood which completely destroyed much of downtown business district including churches and homes The townsfolk responded quickly to help rebuild their city while other businesses vacated following these calamities which left Durango struggling for years until finally starting to rebound beginning with annexations by neighboring jurisdictions around 1960s creating new districts such as east side/west side redevelopment completed since 2000 making this historic community once again thrive
