From the early days of coffee growing in Durango, Colorado, to the present day, gourmet coffee has been a part of the town's culture and economy. The history of gourmet coffee in Durango can be traced back to 1892 when two businessmen named Fenton and Madden started a small business processing beans from local hills. The business was very successful and soon they began packaging their own beans in jars and selling them door-to-door. In 1903, they opened a larger store at 5th & Union which became known as "The Gilded Cage." By 1907, Four Barrel Coffee Company had built up a large customer base in Durango thanks to its unique flavor profile and high quality beans. In 1922, brothers John and Doug Egan purchased Four Barrel Coffee Company and began producing their own roasted beans under the name "Egan's." They continued to grow their company until it merged with Peet's Coffee in 1974. That same year saw the opening of one ofDurango's most famous landmarks - The Gilded Cage - which still offers visitors an interesting caffeine experience today.

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Cooperative was founded in 1912, and today it remains one of the largest cooperatives in North America. In addition to its 50+ stores across the United States, the cooperative also exports coffee to many countries around the world.
Durango is a small town in the southeastern corner of Colorado, in Eagle County. The population was 4,711 at the 2000 census. Durango is located about halfway between Denver and Fort Collins on U.S. Highway 35W, east of the Animas River. The name "Durango" means "place where rocks stand." It was given to this area by Spanish explorers in 1795 while they were exploring the Colorado Plateau. The first permanent settler in what is now Durango was Elias Howe, who built a cabin on the Animas River in 1824. Durango grew rapidly during the late 19th century as a result of its location on two important railroad corridors: The Santa Fe Railroad ran through the town and it became an important stop for travelers on both routes. In 1900, Durango became seat of Eagle County; at that time it consisted of only eight settlements. By 1990, there were over 30 villages within Eagle County and over 100 businesses with employees located within the limits of Durango proper alone! Today, much has changed since those early days when people lived and worked hereabouts – most notably our current economy which has been booming thanks to numerous new developments located in and around Durango over recent years including major automobile manufacturing plants operated by Ford Motor Company (FORD) ; agricultural production activity continues to be vibrant; as well as recreation opportunities available through several golf courses, an amusement park (the Durango Park Racetrack), several water parks/spa complexes/resorts etc., among many others!

By the middle of the 20th century, cafés had become very popular throughout Europe and North America. The name "Durango" comes from Spanish and means "the place where horses were found." Durango also has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1868. One of the first people to live in Durango was José María Martinez who immigrated from Spain in 1868. Martinez founded what is now called the Hotel Martinez which still stands today and is one of the most recognizable landmarks in town. During World War II, Durango played an important role as a military airbase for the United States Army Air Forces northwestern Front during Operation Magic Carpet. In 1945, after World War II ended, Durango became home to 95% of Albuquerque's uranium mining industry and continues to be an important center for uranium production today. Additionally, other industries have moved into Durango over time including agriculture, hotel/motel services, trucking and manufacturing although some are slowly disappearing while others are struggling with economic challenges such as dwindling resources and competition from more efficient methods of production
The first Europeans to visit the area were Jesuit missionaries in 1519. The area was part of the Mexican Empire until 1848, when it became part of the United States of America. Durango is a self-governing municipality with its own government, education and health systems, as well as a market economy. The mountains provide natural resources such as coal and gold, which have made the region one of the most popular tourist destinations in North America.
