The Durango coffee industry began in the early 1900s when a group of entrepreneurs bought a small farm in the town of Durango and started growing coffee. The first beans were grown on the property by José Gomez and his family. In 1912, Antonio García founded a roastery in Durango that became one of the most famous coffee roasters in North America. After World War II, Spanish-speaking Americans began to move into Durango, and so the coffee industry grew even more. In 1968, Jorge Sánchez opened El Paso Coffee Company in downtown Durango, which became one of the most popular small-town cafes in Colorado. During the 1960s and 1970s, manyDurango residents worked at U.S. Army bases stationed throughout western Colorado including Fort Carson (later renamed Ft. Lewis), Craig Air Force Base (now Elmira], Cherry Creek Army Base (now Chinle), and Buckley Air Force Base (now Globe). As military service increased across Colorado, so did demand for quality artisanal coffee beans from Durango's farmers marketeers. By 1984, there were over 100 specialty coffee shops operating throughout western Colorado with around 150 total employees working at them. Today, much of what makes Durango distinctive as an artisan coffee community comes from our continued focus on qualityourced beans - from our farmers markets to our own production facilities - all delivered to your doorstep safe and delicious!

The history of artisan coffee goes back to the early 1800s. Coffee was initially ground up and brewed using natural methods, such as water and sun-dried beans. In the 1830s, a group of Italian immigrants founded a small coffee house in New York City that traded roasted beans with local merchants. By 1840, coffee had spread to England and France, where it began to be produced on larger scale. In 1847, an American named John Brown started selling pre-ground coffee from his home in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. This led to the first commercial sale of whole bean coffee in America.

Durango is a town in Garfield County, Colorado, United States. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. The name "Durango" comes from the Spanish word "durango" meaning "hollow". The first inhabitants of the area that now makes up Durango were the Arikara Indian tribe. In 1875, General George A. Custer and his cavalry unit rode into this region and were met with intense resistance by the Arikara Indians.
