The Durango coffee industry began in the early 1900s when a group of entrepreneurs bought a small farm in the town of Durango and started growing coffee. The first beans were grown on the property by José Gomez and his family. In 1912, Antonio García founded a roastery in Durango that became one of the most famous coffee roasters in North America. After World War II, Spanish-speaking Americans began to move into Durango, and so the coffee industry grew even more. In 1968, Jorge Sánchez opened El Paso Coffee Company in downtown Durango, which became one of the most popular small-town cafes in Colorado. During the 1960s and 1970s, manyDurango residents worked at U.S. Army bases stationed throughout western Colorado including Fort Carson (later renamed Ft. Lewis), Craig Air Force Base (now Elmira], Cherry Creek Army Base (now Chinle), and Buckley Air Force Base (now Globe). As military service increased across Colorado, so did demand for quality artisanal coffee beans from Durango's farmers marketeers. By 1984, there were over 100 specialty coffee shops operating throughout western Colorado with around 150 total employees working at them.
