Commerce City is a city in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 12,636 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins–Aurora-Boulder Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1892 by James S. McCabe and his brother John A. McCabe as the town of Commerce on the banks of the Green River. The name came from their business acumen: "Commerce" meant "trade." In 1907, Commerce City merged with the adjacent towns of Cripple Creek and Northglenn to form what is now known as Fort Collins. When first conceived, Commerce City had no telephone service or even streetlights; it relied instead on hand signals for communication. One reason for this primitive infrastructure may have been that until 1902 there were no schools in the area and children needed to be taken to school by adults if they wanted to learn about town life and commerce! In 1911, entrepreneur George Wickersham opened up what would become Denver's first commercial paper mill which processed recycled paper into large sheets that could be folded like a map and sold as posters or advertising material - an important early development in trade promotion through mass production! Not only did Wickersham pioneer this important industry but he also built one of Fort Collins' first churches (the First Baptist Church). This building still stands today - a reminder that while Commerce City may not have had many flashy accomplishments during its earliest years, it has since undergone several significant redevelopment projects which have made it an exciting place to live, work and raise a family today!

The economy of Commerce City has been based primarily on agriculture since its founding; however, industry has also emerged over the years including manufacturing of automobile parts and dishwashing machines from 1936 until 1984; all three industries are now gone but remain as legacy activities still active today within their respective industries inranies outside of commerce city limits
