Commerce City is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. It was founded by George Armstrong Custer in 1876 as the site of his rancho de la Trinitaria. The name "Commerce" is derived from Spanish words meaning trade and commerce. The town was renamed to honor James K. Polk in 1907, after the president who led America into World War I. Commerce City's population peaked at 15,000 in 1920 but has decreased since then due to suburbanization and other factors. The first settlers of Commerce City were men from Illinois and Missouri who arrived around 1875 on horseback. They started a store and post office in what is now the downtown area of the town. The first store had only two items for sale- cattle and flour. By 1880, there were six stores open in the town with a population of about 100 people each. In 1907, the name change to honor James K. Polk because he had been president during America's entry into World War I, which helped contribute to Commerce City's growth thereafter. A new shopping center was built south of downtown in 1978 which housed all of the local businesses as well as several larger retailers such as Sears Roebuck and JCPenney at that time. However, this Shopping Center failed to create enough jobs or generate tax revenue so it was shut down by1994; All business moved out except for JCPenney which reopened under new management with more job offerings within a few years before closure again by 2002).
