The city was founded in 1876 as a small town named Commerce on a farmstead between Aspen and Averill Park. The name change came about because of an agreement between leaders of Aspen and Greeley to rename each other's cities after states that were then part of Colorado: Denver for Colorado Springs, Boulder for Fort Larimer, and Commerce for Jefferson County. The first known permanent European settler in present day Commerce City was James Wetherbee who arrived in 1824. The city was named after him because he founded a flour mill thereabouts. In 1868 the town replaced its original Adobe Walls location with its current site near Interstate 25 and 3rd Street due to flooding caused by the nearby Larimer River. Commerce City experienced significant growth during the late 19th century as it became an agricultural center for eastern Douglas County and began supplying goods to areas such as Denver and Aurora. One of the most important aspects of this growth was the establishment of two major banks – First National Bank and Citizens National Bank – which helped support local businesses and encouraged economic development. Additionally, several large factories were built in or around town during this time including Pabst Brewing Company (founded in 1902), Compagnie d'Aluminum et de Télégraphie (founded 1923), Standard Oil Company (founded 1907) and Continental Paper Mill (founded 1915). However, by World War I Commerce City had declined slightly due to lack of industry; however, following that conflict both banks regained their former stature within a few decades.
