The Colorado Navy has a rich history dating back to 1876. The first Naval detachment was organized in Centennial, Colorado on July 25 of that year. The present-day navy is the result of the amalgamation of two separate navies, the United States Naval Reserve and the Spanish American War Veterans Navy. The U.S. Naval Reserve was founded in 1794 as part of the Continental Navy and played an important role in America’s effort to secure her independence from Great Britain. By 1865, however, the navy had been disbanded and its members were absorbed into other branches of government. The Spanish American War Veterans Navy was created on September 11th, 1898 following World War I when Spain ceded Puerto Rico and Guam to America as part of peace negotiations that ended in Cuba’s formal capitulation five days later. This fleet also served during World War II as naval forces supporting Operation Overlord, the Allied landings at Normandy and D-Day (June 6th-8th). Today’s navy is one of the most diverse in America with service branches including aviation, amphibious warfare, surface warfare (including submarines), nuclear power projection capabilities, cyber commando units and more! In commemoration of its centennial anniversary this fall – just three years after becoming operational – the Colorado Navy will commemorate its history through a series of events culminating with a large naval parade down State Boulevard on October 6th.

In 1925 – when park boundaries were expanded to include present day Telluride – Centennials became one of nine townships within park boundaries subject to congressional approval for annexation into park lands if necessary (this approval didn’t happen). In 1980 – just before centennial celebrations began - voters passed an initiative creating the City ofCentury through incorporation proceedings initiated by Mayor John Pisani Jr., providing for economic development rights within city limits while preserving open space use rights outside city limits until 2040 although no specific plans exist for redevelopment or public usage beyond 40 years from now (the current zoning map shows an increase in residential development near downtown but little else happening on either side of I-25). Today's economy rests heavily upon both tourism generated from its natural beauty as well as its many corporate offices located throughout both Denver metro areas with satellite campuses throughout western Colorado Springs/Pueblo County . Other major employers include: PepsiCo ; Morrison Lake Farms ; Pueblo Electric Cooperative ; Adobe Systems Incorporated , Lockheed Martin Corporation among others .
