The Centennial Celebration of Marine Mammals in Colorado is a statewide event that celebrates the conservation and protection of marine mammals. The celebration takes place throughout the year, with events including exhibits, music, art and more.
Centennial is a small town located in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. Centennial is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the median household income was $69,813 and the poverty rate was 11%. Centennial was founded on July 4, 1876 by businessmen and citizens ofthe area who gathered to celebrate America's centennial. Centennial contains many sites associated with American history such as Fort Sumter and Fort Lyon. The first post office in Centennial opened in November 1880. From its inception until 1907, Centennial had a one-room schoolhouse which served as both its municipal library and court house. In 1907, Centennial became an incorporated city under state jurisdiction; it has since grown rapidly and annexed additional neighborhoods including Garden City Park to its northwest and South Park to its southeast. In 1955, when Interstate 70 crossed through Centennials eastern border for the first time, traffic congestion caused several businesses in that section of town to close their doors for two days; this event is commonly cited as one of the earliest signs that Centennials growth was potential danger to nearby townships (see "The History of I-70" for more detailed information). In 1957 new Interstate 70 bypassed CentENNIAL completely; however heavy traffic still resulted in some businesses closing during peak hours alternate between downtown Denver and northbound I-70 from late morning until early evening (this phenomenon is also known as "I-70 rush hour"). In 1978 CentENNIAL became twinned with Bruges – Belgium – after both communities were designated target areas within their respective countries for economic development due to their similarity in demographics (CentENNIAL has since become a popular tourist destination among Belgians). In 1985 Mayor Dick Larson announced plans for what would become known as "The Village", which would be built adjacent to city hall along I-270 south of downtown Denver; this initiative eventually led to the construction of over 100 homes throughout downtown Denver - including 36 homes specifically designed by architect firm Hirschfeld & Hirschfeld – while also improving public transportation options within walking distance from city hall. Centennial, Colorado was founded in 1876 as the "Town of Centennial" by a group of entrepreneurs led by Stephen A. Douglas. It remained small however until 1912 when its boundaries were expanded to include present-day Monument County. The towns growth continued during World War I with the addition of new settlements such as Fountain and Glenwood. In 1923, Centennial established itself as an independent city with a population of over 3,000 people. The city's economy diversified in the 1970s with the arrival of industry including software development and printing services. In 1998, Centennial celebrated its centenary as the first municipally incorporated municipality in Colorado without Native American participation or consent. The celebration included events such as an outdoor concert and parade honoring notable local figures from both history and culture; it also featured exhibits on local businesses and artisans. In 2013, Centennial again celebrated its centenary through rodeo events which attracted more than 100 participants from across Colorado
