In 1911, a group of men including John Wesley Powell prepared for an expedition that would lead them deep into Yellowstone National Park. Although they failed to find any water sources within reach, their achievement showed that horses could be ridden unsupported deep into national park without being lost or exhausted. The name of the town comes from a local peak called Castle Rock (or "Rocky Top"). The first settlers were farmers who arrived in 1876 and began to farm the land around Castle Rock. In 1912, a post office was established at Castle Rock and the population increased to 2,100. By 1930, the population had grown to 5,000 and in 1960 it reached 10,000. The growth of Castle Rock slowed after that but has continued since then due to its proximity to Fort Collins and other cities in Weld County. One of the most important aspects of Cast Lead's history is its relationship with oil exploration and production on what is now known as Range Mesa National Monument. This activity began during World War I when soldiers led by Colonel John Hunkler explored mineral rights near present-day Castle ROCK Road while under occupation by Mexican forces. After hostilities ended, oil companies started exploration on nearby mountains including Rocky Mesa and Morenci Hills which Eventually led to production of natural gas on what are now hills near Cast Lead today.
