The first marine detachment arrived here on October 1st 1917 under Colonel John Davenport Jr., Commandant of Marine Barracks San Diego. Canon City is a small city located in Douglas County, Colorado. The population was 9,731 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1876, Canon City became the first city in Colorado to be founded on the current site of what is now Canon City. A post office called Canon City was established in 1877 and remained in operation until 1913. The town was named after John Fenton Canon, an early settler who operated a flour mill hereabouts. Canon City has experienced significant growth over the years, due primarily to its location as a manufacturing center for digital equipment and other electronic products. The local economy has been buoyed by such sectors as aerospace engineering and information technology; real estate; tourism; and agriculture. In recent years, however,ctorCity have seen challenges such as joblessness and homelessness that haveaffected some residents adversely. It should be noted that while there are many different aspects of life that make up this small community – ranging from culture to cuisine – one thing that is consistently present is tight-knit community spirit which helps to keep things fun and engaging for everyone involved. Canon City, Colorado is a small town located in the San Luis Valley of southern Colorado. The population was 2,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Canon City-Norvell, Colorado micropolitan area. The first inhabitants of what is now Canon City were Native Americans who lived there for many years before white settlers arrived in 1859. In 1861, General James H. Grant approved the creation of Butte County and named it after himself, Baron James H. Grant of Edinburgh, Scotland. The new county included all present-day San Luis Valley except for Canon City and Norvell which were added to it in 1872 as part of Junction County. In 1903, Canon City became a city and changed its name to Canon City-Norvell. The change occurred because at that time most people living in Norvell considered themselves residents of CanonCity while most people living in CanonCity considered themselves residents of Norvell. After World War II ended, many businesses closed down due to lack of demand from American troops stationed abroad or because they could not compete with those brought over by foreign companies such as Ford Motors or Chrysler Corporation. However, some businesses did manage to keep going and continue providing local jobs until the early 2000s when economic decline began to take hold throughout much of Western United States caused by factors such as global recession and energy prices hikes that devastated both local economies and employment opportunities within them
The city of Canon City, Colorado was founded in 1876 by the merger of two small settlements, Canon and Iron Springs. The area now known as Canon City was originally occupied by the Hohokam people, who were hunter-gatherers. The first European to visit the area was Captain John Smith in 1540. The town initially consisted of only a few homes and a post office. In 1892, the first school opened in Canon City. By 1907, there were over 100 businesses in the city. In 1916, Canon City became a city and changed its name to Colorado Springs.
