Broomfield is a small city in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 5,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora–Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1871 by businessmen John Broom and James Prentice. It became an incorporated city in 1914. The name "Broomfield" originated from a local prairie dog that used to reside there and which had a broomstick-shaped tail because of its propensity to sweep up dirt and other debris left behind by settlers on their homesteads during the early days of the community's formation. The first settlers arrived in 1871, when John Broom and James Prentice traveled overland from Fort Collins torelative new destination of Broomfield Township. They were looking for land that would provide them with access to irrigation water that could be used for farming purposes as well as timberlands for building homes and businesses. By 1875, some 400 people had settled in what would become Broomfield Township; however, it wasn't until 1915 that incorporation into a town occurred due topressure from residents within the township who desired greater autonomy within their own municipality than what was available through annexation with neighboring municipalities. When Broomfield became an incorporated city on April 14, 1914, its population numbered 794 inhabitants; however, this number rapidly increased due to annexations by other municipalities over the next few years resulting in Broomfield's total population reaching 953 by 1924 (a figure which reached 1,063 by 1940). Today, Broomfield remains one of Colorado's smallest cities with a total population size just north of 5,000 residents – making it one of its most diverse communities both racially and religiously speaking. Broomfield is a small town in the U.S. state of Colorado. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Broomfield is located in Arapahoe County and is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what became Broomfield was James McDowell in 1847. In 1860, John Wickersham established the first store there and post office called "Wickersham" until it closed its doors in 1903. William Brien bought the store in 1903 and changed its name to "Broomfield". In 1924, he donated land to build the present dayBroomfield Elementary School on which current residents were first welcomed as students on November 12th, 1924. The community's economic development started with a new shopping center being built west of town by Joe Fenton in 1961 which served as Broomfield's primary industry for many years up until that point The mall also included a variety of businesses including restaurants, gasoline stations/convenience stores and an automotive garage before it burned down in 1990 In 1984, Broomfield voters approved a $5 million bond issue to help fund downtown redevelopment projects such as enlarging Broomfield High School and building a new library .
