Brighton, Colorado is a small town located in the Rocky Mountains of southeastern Colorado. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census and has grown to 2,242 since then. The community is surrounded by mountains on three sides and a desert on the fourth. The town was founded in 1892 by General James H. Shippey as a rustling place for cattle and sheep. It grew slowly until it had a population of 514 in 1912. In 1930, the town voted to incorporate as a city. Brighton, Colorado is a small town in the San Miguel County seat of Pueblo. The population was 514 at the 2010 census. It is located on Brighton Mesa, about 25 miles north of downtown Pueblo and 50 miles east of Denver. The first settler in what is now Brighton was John Halliday who built a log cabin in 1868. In 1870, J.P. Haughton purchased land from Mr. Halliday and began to develop it into a community with sawmills, a gristmill and other businesses. In 1872, JF Davenport bought some of Haughton's land and developed it into what is now Brighton Hills Cemetery which has been in operation since 1875. In the early 1900s, large farms were abandoned as people turned to montane farming opportunities near Aspen and Fort Collins for farmland that could be irrigated using water pumped from snowcapped peaks nearby. Many residents left Brighton for these new opportunities but many remained behind to maintain property values and support their local communities by working in industries such as agriculture or mining until they sold their homes in the late 1940s or 1950s when Interstate 70 divided the county along racial lines creating separate jurisdictions with different social mores and tax systems that continued to impact Brighton until recent times
Brighton, Colorado was founded in 1881 by the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. The community sprang up around a railroad depot and trading post. The original residents were mainly miners and their families who bartered goods with other communities in the area for water, food, and other necessities. In 1902, Brighton became an incorporated town. It experienced rapid growth during World War I as troops moved through the area for battle. When the war ended, many of the new residents left to return home or start their own businesses. By 1920, Brighton had reached its peak population size with over 1,000 people living there. However, it began to decline during the 1930s as industry shifted from mining to agricultural production. During the 1940s and 1950s, Brighton saw increasing development due to population growth rates in neighboring cities and because of military activity in nearby towns such as Arvada (1948) and Golden (1949). However, by 1970 Brighton's population had decreased to just 100 people.
