The name came from Chief Qwilleran's vision where he saw a great white Buffalo grazing near what would become University Hill on July 4th, 1776 while traveling throughHidatsa country between White Sands National Monument east of Albuquerque and Canon City west of Fort Collins On September 16th 1800 John Halliday patented 8vo., entitled "The Townsite or Campus Arcadia" for what would eventually become University Hill/Boulder At this time there were no public buildings or even fences – it was simply undeveloped land bounded by Putnam Street on one side, High School Road on the other side (present day Anschutz Medical Campus), Yale Avenue on 3rd Street east adjacent to Union Station north thereofand Bannerman Placewestward across High School Road leading northeast into Heye Park today's CU campus . Boulder, Colorado is a city in the United States of America. It is located in Boulder County and has a population of over 240,000 as of 2018. The first people to live in what is now Boulder arrived by way of the Fraser River Valley in the late 18th century. They were farmers and ranchers who built cabins and huts along the banks of the river for shelter from winter weather. By 1800, some small businesses had been started near where Fort Lyon now stands, including a mill and tannery. In 1821, when Colorado became part of the United States, Boulder was incorporated as a town. In 1864, when due east of Denver it straddled both boundaries between Weld County on the north side and Jefferson County on the south side, residents decided to move their county seat away from Commerce City because that site was unprofitable given its difficult geography. On July 1st of that year they voted to move to Boulder because it was then an established town with "a good depot for transportation" and "good public buildings". The new county seat was designated at State Street and Broadway just east of University Avenue (later called 14th Street). The growth of Denver eventually forced Boulder out into decline beginning in 1870 until 1906 when Interstate 70 bypassed downtown making it easier for commuters to reach work without having to go through downtown Denver which became known as "the entertainment district".
