In 1954, Arvada became a separate city when it merged with Pueblo to form Pueblo–La Plata County. In 1980, it again became a separate city when it merged with La Junta to form La Junta–Arvadado City Council District No. 1 effective July 1, 1980. On November 8th of that year voters approved annexation by Steamboat Springs into La Junta-Arvadado City Limits effective December 31st of that year without any opposition from either party or residents who were concerned about possible negative consequences of such an annexation including increased traffic congestion and housing prices within city limits
