Yuba City is a city in Yuba County, California, United States. The population was 24,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Yuba" is Chinook for "river". The first permanent residents of what would become Yuba City were pioneers who came overland from Southern California in 1849 and 1851. They built a log cabin on the north side of the Yuba River. In 1852, James Fenton opened an agricultural store in what would later be known as downtown Yuba City. By 1860, there were six stores and two hotels in town; one was run by Fenton and his son-in-law John Waddell. In 1865, gold was discovered near present day Sutterville and soon after spike mines began to be developed all around town; these mines yielded a high amount of gold which led to street names like Gold Rush Gulch and Spike Road (later renamed Main Street). Many businesses connected with this new industry such as Fenton's Store continued to operate until the late 1800s when they went out of business or converted into housing developments such as Hillcrest Terrace or Vineyards Plaza. In 1898 an act passed by the state legislature authorized school construction in central Yuba County so that children from rural areas could have access to education up through grade 12.; accordingly, First Christian School was organized on October 26th that same year by Reverend Elisha Griggs and Driscoll Laughlin with 10 pupils from Humboldt County under their tutelage. That same year saw also incorporation of Sutterville as a city with about 20 citizens; it should be noted that at this time Sutterville consisted only ofCHOICEUDIRECTORY buildings not any kind of commercial establishment akin to what we know today! However even though incorporation did not bring much development initially it did help lay down some groundwork for later growth including: 1) establishment of Central High School which functioned as both primary school and adult academy 2) establishment of agriculture/industrial schools 3) creation/establishment (1899)of Easternmost College
