The history of the Army in West Sacramento, California began with a small post office and military barracks located on the southeast corner of Fifth Street and Main Street. The first soldier to arrive in West Sacramento was Major General George A. Custer in 1859. In 1861, the post office was moved to its current location and it became known as "Apostle's Station." The first battalion of the California Volunteers was organized at this post in 1862 and soon after, other units were added until there was a regiment stationed here permanently. In 1865, when California joined the Union side during the American Civil War, many soldiers from here served alongside their brethren fighting on the battlefields across America. Many soldiers who lived and breathed West Sacramento participated in this important event. After the war ended, many men returned home but that didn't mean they stopped serving our country; several companies of cavalry still stand today as part of our local military community. West Sacramento is named for two of its founding fathers: James Nye and George Hearn. The first store opened in 1853 on what is now 5th Street. In 1872, the railroad arrived and by 1886 it had become one of America's leading transportation companies with 6 stations throughout the Western United States. West Sacramento Nightmare began when an express train derailed near its downtown area on December 3, 1888 while traveling from Stockton to Reno; 16 people were killed and more than 100 injured as a result of this crash. In 1914, Mayor Charles Crouch purchased 4 parcels of land between Sixth Avenue and Seventh Street for $3,000 which he renamed "City Park". He planned to build a public library here but never did so because World War I interfered with his plans. In 1922 Mayor Harry Elmer Walsh purchased City Park from Charles Crouch for $1 million dollars which made it available for use as part of West Sacramento's newly formed city government. Walsh envisioned that City Park would become one of West Sacramento's key tourist attractions due to its rich history and beautiful architecture dating back to early Spanish settlers who founded this location in 1795 AD! This plan worked out well until World War II when City Park became home to many U S Army barracks used during World War II including Fort MacArthur (now known as Camp Pendleton) and Fort Yates (later Camp Roberts). Also located at City Park during this time were Kaiser Permanente Hospital - now Kaiser Marymount Medical Center - then known as First Medical Center; Hotel Regency Court; Masonic Temple No 1 & 2; Stonington Hall - later Knoebel Hall - all now gone or been converted into housing units! After being abandoned by Mayor Walsh due to lack of funds following World War II, City Park reverted back to private ownership until it was donated by local businessman John Leland in 1969 to be used as a park once again! On October 10th that year residents voted overwhelmingly (56% yes) on incorporation into the new West Sacramento Municipal Authority! This marks the beginning of an era where community control over their own destiny ensued within our boundaries! On November 9th 1969 WAMA installed its first broadcast tower - atop sister station KQED - making WSMR one stop away from all Californians across Northern California!!! Citizens have always wanted their say about things like funding levels for various services such as libraries etc., however no decisions have ever been made without input from citizens...until recently! On January 27th 2013 voters passed Proposition 30 which will change how cities are funded statewide!!! This means that if citizens approve Measure O they will get certain monies theyve been asking for such as more money specifically allocated towards transit projects!!!!!!!!!
