These aircraft were used for tactical training and flew missions against an adversary known as the People's Republic of China (PRC). The Sabres proved effective during these flights and helped improve the operational capability of the 1st BW. In 1953, the wing moved from Beale AFB to Wasco AFB, where it continued to operateMitchell bombers under callsign "Golden Eagles". In 1957, however, with the introduction of swept-wing jet aircraft into service, the 1BW was equipped with F-80 Shooting Stars which became its primary fighter plane. From 1958 through 1962 it operated five squadrons of F-84 Thunderjets as its frontline fighter squadron; this program resulted in increased air superiority over China during their conflict with Chairman Mao's Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA). On October 5th, 1988 a Boeing 727 cargo plane carrying military equipment crashed into flames while en route from Manila to Shanghai after takeoff from Guam Airport; all passengers survived but three members of crew: pilot Capt., First Class Eddy Ramos and flight attendants Mrs. Barbara Aquino and Mrs. Irma Perez died instantly due to burn injuries sustained when their clothing caught fire while flying over Japan on their way home following a business trip there that had been scheduled before 8/7 Japanese Standard Time!
