The city was founded on May 15, 1885 by two brothers who were looking for a place to grow coffee. They found that there was already a small population of coffee farmers in the area, so they started crop planting and began selling beans to local merchants. In 1916, Walnut streets were named after famous American coffee breeders – Harry Mundt and John Fenton – in recognition of their contribution to the industry. Today's walnut industry is one of the most diverse in the country; products include nuts (walnuts are not considered fruits), breads and snacks such as trail mix and nutella bars, among others As of 2006 there were over 100 companies that produce walnuts domestically and exports account for about 60% of all production worldwide

Arabic merchants also began exporting Java black to Europe and North America during the 16th century. Spanish explorers discovered Indonesia in 1521 and soon afterwards tasted Javas first cup of this stimulant beverage. European traders brought coffee to Spain, Portugal, Italy, England and Holland. Upon discovery of new markets, these early brewers increased production significantly; however, by 1600 a single mill could produce 1 kg (2 lb) of Javas purest coffee beans! By 1700 a large number of small breweries had emerged throughout Great Britain; however most exported their product to continental Europe instead because it was cheaper than shipping products back home! About this time Dutch doctor Jan Baptist van Heemskerck imported some Indonesian coffee beans into Rotterdam where he founded the first European-owned cooperative brewery - De Vereenigte Zonen der Koffiebrouwers van Rotterdam (The Association of Coffee Brewers from Rotterdam). By 1800 at least fifteen different types of coffees had been developed throughout Great Britain; all but two being brewed using coal tar as an add-on agent! These earlier coffees were not very high quality because they were often blended with other beverages such as beer or wine to make up for lower quality Arabica beans! However over time more expensive and better quality Arabica beans became available so that by 1830 only two types remained: Robusta ( roasted pepper ) and Blonde ( light roast ).
